Memoirs of a Geisha – Chapter 3

Filed under: Designer Tribute, Mix and Match, Theme Outfits — Candy Lemmon @ 5:34 pm

It’s been a while since my last kimono tribute, but not for lack of inspiration. Turner Classic Movies (the movie-lover’s paradise and my very favorite channel) has been exploring the depiction of Asians in classic film, and I felt drawn to more traditionally beautiful Geisha apparel.

Mare Vollmar’s kimonos are poetry in motion. If the geisha of old wore such elaborate and delicate designs it’s no surprise that they inspired so much mystery and sensuality. The silk of this kimono has been dyed a deepening pink and spills out in beautiful sheer layers at the sleeves and skirt. There was a simpler option for both, but I’ve never been a no-frills kind of girl. I felt so lovely in it that I didn’t even pose this shot – the landmark for this location will take you right to the geisha dance I’m using. The pink uchikake (robe-like brocaded cape) at my back is a sculpted wonder by Cherry Tokyo. I’ve worn it before, but it deserves more attention. The necessary theatrical folding fans were an OnRez purchase, for only L$35 each.

Some of you answered my plea for Geisha skins and hair on my last “Memoirs” post, and I have Tomoyuki Batra to thank for this perfect hairstyle – made more perfect by the color-changing hair ornaments! You should already know about Fricka Morgath’s skins, the quality is outstanding and the prices just can’t be beat (including several amazing freebies too!), and I’ll be featuring quite a few more in the future. The hot pink makeup matched my obi perfectly and was a bright enough shade that I could finally wear these floral earrings from a past Seasons hunt. My kanzashi (or hair ornament) was included with the kimono, and I tinted the hair pins a pastel pink. Both my fur-tipped fan and rose corsage are from Bare Rose kimono costumes, which always compel me to press “buy” and lose my lindens. A stunning example of one of my favorites is coming up, expect a much darker take on “geisha” soon.

Free Tibet!

Filed under: Designer Tribute, Freebie Love, Mix and Match, Theme Outfits — Candy Lemmon @ 10:57 am

Second Life is a social game, but I have a hard time acting like it. My friends list is a barren place, and my chat skills pretty much die after small talk and topical jokes – but Martha is the exception. Everybody needs a virtual best friend to loaf around your house, demand your latest creations, and to dress up in exotic freebie finds for a drag-licious photo shoot.

That’s right, I said FREE. Yak & Yeti is a store I found by inspecting some fantastic jewelry a fabulously dressed woman was wearing – it was the most intricate and stunningly worked Indian necklace I had seen in Second Life, and I’ve been to every “Indian” store in search, so you can imagine my amazement when I read the prices – L$0. For EVERYTHING. Beautiful stacked bangles, saris (the fabric wrapped around us as skirts and over the shoulder) and cholis (the cropped shirts) in every color, and the most breathtaking Bollywood Jewelry set including earrings, necklace, 3 types of nose piercings, and a tika (our forehead ornaments) – in 3 color combinations!!! Needless to say, Martha and I bought the whole store, and I happily left a donation for the incredibly generous creator.

It was always my dream to have an Indian wedding – wearing red, dripping with jewelry, elaborate henna designs on my arms and legs. Of course, eloping sort of put that on hold, but Van and I still plan on pulling it off some day. Until then, I’ll wear my Yak & Yeti finery and smile. I’m wearing the Bollywood jewelry set in silver and topaz, with a pile of glass Indian Devdas bangles. They come with several wearing options, and would be a great ethnic accessory for summer, even mixed with something very Western. My very blue eye makeup is thanks to a Giana Paine skin, part of a new line for sale at only L$150. I’ve been loving her “Morena” skintone options. My hair is a newer release from Cake, the Barcelona; which I bought in a red and experimentally tinted darker. It worked well, which is good, because despite it’s quality I think L$375 is a ridiculous price for one color. Mine is the blue Silk Sari, with choli from the blue Beaded Lengha. My blue mehendi was a Mashooka Designs hunt item, and one of the over 40 amazing gifts – I haven’t felt so lucky since the Ivalde Easter hunt!

I had the privilege of styling Miss. Martha, who is quite the social butterfly and has an inventory suspiciously full of designer clothing, despite her empty wallet. Her eyes and expressive skin were gifts from Toast Bard, and reminded me of over-the-top Bollywood drama with love-ridden heroines. The wig is from Zsa-Zsa’s, and if you haven’t been to see the wacky hair selection yet, you’re missing out. She’s wearing the Nepalese Sari in red, mixed with the choli from the gold Embroidery Sari for a bit more color. We both chose the chained bridal nose piercing, hers from the gold and tourmaline set, along with Bindi B in yellow. Her colorful wax bangles are from the Indian Paheli set, in red.

Bad Company

Filed under: Designer Tribute, Mix and Match, Review — Candy Lemmon @ 11:31 am

You know the girl, the one still wearing last night’s makeup as she stumbles off the tour bus to have a smoke. You’d hate her if you weren’t afraid she’d kick your ass and steal your boyfriend. Me, I just want to get in her panties.

I’m a bad girl wannabe, I never grew out of it – so when Bakersfield Kidd dropped this wicked tattoo set on me, I had the perfect excuse to indulge in it. The Dia de Los Muertos-inspired set is packed with ink, made of over 50 separate old-school images and truly rocks my socks. It’s unisex and would work great for any rocker boy out there, but it’s not for weaklings – with ink on both sides of the kneecaps this baby requires some seriously high pain tolerance. My glitter-hawk by Digit Darkes is so very cool that I have a hard time shopping when I wear it, it’s hard to look at anything else! For the clothes I wanted to keep it tough and sexy to show off the tattoo work, and be as close to indecent as publicly possible. A prim Bare Rose vest and these damaged socks from Etchd are favorites I’m wearing again, and these boots are my default for footwear with attitude. These pasties by Indie Rainbow and some playful animal-print panties are an homage to the gothy girls I’ve known, though they wouldn’t be caught dead with a diamond-encrusted lip ring. This vertical bridge is my favorite piercing, it feels like a kind of punk bindi to me.

In this closeup you get a better look at my favorite feature, an included prim tattoo (yes PRIM) for your neck. I had never encountered that option before, and I think it’s a great one. Plus, it’s a lovely Mexican skull design – I’ve been wearing it alone a lot. Why don’t you crack open a beer and join me?

Skin: LF Chai – Vedette in Cinnamon
Eyes: Miriel – The Iridescent Collection – Blue Opal
Hair: NATURALe by Digit Darkes – Defiance in Glitter Punk

Boots: Axis Mundi by Katat0nik – Sculpted Boots
Bridge Piercing: DEEKS – Blue Piercing Set
Lip Piercing: Juicy – Diamond Encrusted Lip Ring in Black

Thunder and Lightning

Filed under: Mix and Match — Candy Lemmon @ 11:26 am

Put your umbrellas away – the only danger in mixing cloudy grey and electric yellow are scattered compliments and a 90% chance of a smile.

Van is demonstrating a young and playful take on formal-wear, ala the funky and fashionable Chuck Bass of Gossip Girl. His striped polo and plaid blazer with hand-drawn bowtie and diamond pin details is a beautiful Paper Couture design available at OnRez.com. These Shai Delacroix’s grey tuxedo slacks have a fantastic satin cummerbund that dress up any look, and his embroidered Shanghai dress shoes echo the feeling of wealth. His hairstyle is a newer look from Aoharu, and Miriel’s “Peridot” is behind his pale green eyes. He won’t be swapping his Scorpio skin much it would appear – we both love him in it.

Van gave me a little pocket money a few days ago, and I ran right out to purchase my first Chai skin. I chose her “Antonia” makeup, a lovely green eye, and I’ve never been more satisfied… except now I want all the others :). I’m stepping out again in my yellow Maitreya heels – what can I say, I love bright colors and I love stilettos. For some reason, shoes are the hardest thing for me to buy, and these pumps work their way into a lot of my outfits. The jumper-dress is a design I had somehow missed from Aoharu, with a sculpted petal skirt that can be worn alone (a feature they have been including a lot with their dresses, and another reason I’m just smitten with the brand), and a splash of yellow banded at the waist. I’m not any good at pulling off neutrals (maybe it’s the bright red hair?), so a little color is always welcome in my world. I chose a puffed-sleeve blouse from another Aoharu outfit, and tinted a cravat an acid yellow shade. You’ll see a lot of ties and bowties on this blog, I love them so. This hair is my new “default” style, by Mirai Shan, who has a uniquely sexy and fresh selection at her store. The hair flower is a past Kurotsubaki group gift, and my Candy Nail of the day is the Jel Drop Set in Lemon.

On Van:
Skin: The Abyss – Scorpio in Dystopia
Eyes: Miriel – The Jeweled Collection – Peridot
Hair: Aoharu – Paul in Strawberry Milk (Tinted Red, thanks to Cajsa Lilliehook for the tip!)
Shirt and Blazer: Paper Couture – Paper Couture – Plaid Casual Suit Top (Available from Ava Lu OnRez)
Pants and Cummerbund: Casa del Shai – The Classic Tuxedo in Grey
Shoes: Jeepers Creepers – Shanghai in Black and Steel

On Candy:

Jumper-Dress: Aoharu – Sporty Salopette in White

Sex and the Sim – Episode 4

Filed under: Freebie Love, Mix and Match, Theme Outfits — Van Kline @ 9:26 pm

It’s finally time for the last Sex in the City couple, Charlotte York and Dr. Trey MacDougal.

We were excited to discover that this series had caught the attention of New World Notes writer Hamlet Au. Bask in our fame with us.

Here we have Mr. and Mrs. MacDougal in all their waspy glory. Candy and I look like we’re on our way to a fabulous liquid brunch with Trey’s overbearing mother, Bunny. Charlotte has a very classic, conservative, sweet style. Candy captures that well-bred, good-girl look beautifully with this floral dress, aptly named “The Charlotte,” from Artilleri. The dress comes with adorable little ties at the shoulders, and lace on the skirt. It’s cool when designers show love for their work by adding little details like this. The round toe pumps are flirty and cute, and you can score them in three colors right now as a subscribomatic group gift!

I know some folks must be wondering why we picked Trey and not Char’s man in the film, Harry Goldenblatt. We honestly just think Trey had better style and I didn’t want my first bald appearance to be Harry. I’ve always liked Trey’s neatly tailored, old money look and his ability to pull off pastels. This classy Saville suit is a new one available at S.F. Designs. The lilac shirt and tie could easily have come right out of Trey’s wardrobe rack on the set. And from Park Avenue to the Polo Grounds, you can’t go wrong with a perfect pair of dress shoes from Storm Schmooz.

If you missed it, see the first installment featuring Carrie and Mr. Big here: Sex and the Sim – Episode 1
Part Two featuring Samantha and Smith here: Sex and the Sim – Episode 2
And Part Three featuring Miranda and Steve here: Sex and the Sim – Episode 3

Fresh Nylons

Filed under: Designer Tribute, Freebie Love, Mix and Match — Candy Lemmon @ 4:48 pm

Searching for freebies is at least half the appeal. Finding the sales, hidden items, or my personal favorite – hunts, it’s fun and rewarding. This, is not one of those occasions. YOU have several new free Nylon Pinkney avatars, including skins, hair, and full outfits in your inventory, RIGHT NOW.

Dust off your “Library” folder, click “Clothing” and feast your eyes on “Clubgoer Female”, including this gorgeous skin I’m sporting. “Gamer Guy” contains Van’s outfit, belt, helmet with microphone, AND his handsome red-headed skin that I’m absolutely smitten with. I loved the “Gamer Girl” avatar, but I had a lot more fun with the slouchy tie and blazer from Nylon’s “Musician Male” – great menswear on a pretty girl is always sexy and stylish – and I predict this afro will funk-ify many of my outfits to come. My big gold bamboo earrings are a staple for any diva, and helped to make the outfit feminine and flattering. I matched my nail polish with a shiny gold from Candy Nail’s basic line (don’t be surprised if you see this store in every post, I’m in love). I decided “broke artist” was the overall result, and brought out a Bare Rose cap with a few lindens – but no-one seemed to want to help a sister out. Van’s sparking astro-gun is a great toy from Gritty Kitty (I was jealous and had to buy one of my own), and his buckled boots were a past freebie from Katat0nik.

On Candy:
Skin: Clubgoer Female Avatar (FREE!)
Hair: Musician Male Avatar (FREE!)
Outfit: Musician Male Avatar (FREE!)
Earrings: Kimberly Casanova Designs – Camboo Earrings in Gold
Manicure: Candy Nail – Basic Pack – Gold
Pedicure: Candy Nail – Basic Pack – Gold
Hat: Bare Rose – Tietop Bolero Cap (Beige Option)

Skin: Gamer Guy Avatar (FREE!)
Outfit: Gamer Guy Avatar (FREE!)
Boots: Katat0nik – Sculpted Boots

Hello Kitty!

Filed under: Freebie Love, Mix and Match — Candy Lemmon @ 11:20 pm

By now the secret is out, and there’s no need for me to say how creative and refreshing the Japanese design aesthetic is. You’ve probably even been to some Japanese shopping sims, bought a few Lolita dresses, and marveled at the overall quality and value. Here’s a decidedly anime-influenced look, that was almost entirely free.

If you’re an avid fan of Japanese designers, you may recognize the Harajuku Box sim I’m shooting in. It was my first trip, and I had a great time exploring and finding new content – which, you might have guessed, is part of the appeal. This outfit is a chimera of freebie finds, the love child of scavenger hunts, limited time freebies, group gifts, and dollarbie madness from Izumiya. You may remember this store from its recent feature by Adaire DeCuir of Free*Style and Isabella Baroque of Who Let The Dorks Out?; in fact, their post “The Reluctant Neko” inspired me to do this. I know a lot of people out there in the sl fashion community are always human, and never costume-y, and it has never made a lot of sense to me. To each their own of course, and I certainly can respect someone else’s personal style, but I love the genres of second life-only fashion: neko, steampunk, mermaid. Why not have fun with it?

I didn’t set out to make an outfit out of freebies, in fact I didn’t even realize I was. I only knew I loved my new flowered jumper from Izumiya, and wanted to build on it. I know it’s not considered very fashionable to go so matchy-matchy, but sometimes I can’t help myself. In the store where I work, there is a limited number of colors I can use in each display (the idea is to draw the eye with a concentrated look), and I unwittingly carry that idea into my wardrobe sometimes. Sugary bue and pink is something I would never wear in real life, but I wouldn’t strap on a tail and ears like this fluffy Atomic pair either. I might try this brash makeup from Cake however, I’m young and love to experiment. Once I had my direction, I found a pink sweater and searched my undershirts for this past gift from Blaze. The collar made me reach for prim cuffs, and I thought of this darling pair from Likka Noel’s pink-checked Alice costume, a recent freebie – although I’d already bought her blue Alice outfit (only L$20 full price). I’m a sucker for Disney, and they came with cute mixable extras like bowties and my sock frills. These patterned socks are from a limited-time Crystal Queendom freebie gown, which I slipped into some Mary-Jane Tesla platforms (a gift available for joining their group). Socks with a pair of heels is downright sexy, and something I wear all the time in both lives. Also pictured and two of my favorite new things are this adorable and FREE kitty belt-purse from Izumiya, and my pretty blue and pink princess manicure by Candy Nail.

The Last Unicorn

Filed under: Designer Tribute, Mix and Match — Candy Lemmon @ 6:36 pm

When I was a little girl, I just adored unicorns. Today when Aoharu sent a notice about their new releases, I was delighted to find that hadn’t changed at all.

Opening the image, my eyes shot immediately to this dress – the puffed sleeve, the asymmetrical neckline, and the gorgeous, fantasy-fulfilling, jeweled unicorn design. I ran to the store and struggled with the many color options (Which to choose? I want them all!), finally deciding on a versatile white, and clicking to pay I was informed that it was only L$180. Less than two hundred linden, for quality like this? I could afford to buy it in all the colors I wanted! If I needed a reminder, -this- has shown me why I fell in love with Aoharu. I was so excited, I don’t even mind that this photo had to be taken without windlight (my Unicorn friend didn’t seem to want to rez).

My fancy glitter stockings are a must-have from Bijou and this skin is another beauty from the Sierra line at Cake. They have been one of my most expensive purchases but I’m so happy with the unusual makeup options, like this two-toned eyeshadow look. My jeweled nails are a birthstone pack from Candy Nail, and the hairdo is one of my all-time favorites because of its rockabilly sexiness and the blonde streaks that remind me of my own.

Skin: Cake – Sierra Set 2 400 in Ivory
Eyes: Miriel – The Fantastic Realism Collection – Marine
Hair: Here Comes Trouble – Nalirra in Exclusive Red
Dress: Aoharu – Jeweled Horse Dress in White

Fairy Tales – Sleeping Beauty

Filed under: Designer Tribute, Mix and Match, Theme Outfits — Candy Lemmon @ 12:03 pm

“Once upon a time, a beautiful Princess was cursed by a scorned Fairy. Her evil magic was so strong that the spell could not be removed, but a kind Fairy offered a gift instead – instead of falling to her death, the Princess would sleep for a thousand years… and only be awakened by the kiss of true love.”

“The Prince, overwhelmed with love, bends to kiss the sleeping Princess.”

“Pure imagination” is a phrase that is near and dear to my heart, and something I often say to myself when I’m enjoying the creativity of four Yips. While I was exploring her newest build, a piece of curling fabric caught my eye. When I followed, it became a quilted bed covered in flowers, set high on poles, and it was asking me to sit. It was then I saw the fabric was a robe. Fluttering out across the floor for miles, it was a setting only fit for a princess… so I did what any girl would do, and waited for my prince. Van chose the red jacket from June Dion’s “Debauchee” for a young and passionate prince, and wore this sword to slice the briars from the castle wall. I wore only the silk of four Yips’ flowered robe, and a branch of roses in my hair.

“The Princess opened her eyes for her first look at love.”

In our real lives, Van and I are newlyweds. Having the luxury of a first life love, we’ve never even partnered. I think that helped to make me love this shoot more than any of our others. Instead of a real ceremony, we eloped and spent our savings on a Honeymoon in Disney World; so the white gown and Disney subject matter make me doubly sentimental. My dress is a mix of two Last Call designs, with “Brilliante” as the focus and the bustled “Josephine” skirt adding fantasy and volume. I decided to wear the same messy Aden hairstyle, because I imagine them just waking up together the next morning and holding a ceremony by themselves in the sun. The roses were created from a Waka & Yuki hair accessory, and served as symbols for the story’s hardships and love. My fairy-tale veil and circlet were both free, one from Nylon and the other a hunt surprise from Kouse Singh. Van wore a formal white jacket with golden epolets and cuffs from the Bare Rose “Imperial Guard” outfit, and a red rose to honor his maiden’s namesake.

“And they lived happily ever after.”

Make Your Own Cupcakes!

Filed under: Designer Tribute, Freebie Love, Mix and Match — Candy Lemmon @ 6:14 pm

If you know what’s good for you, you’ve already been to the <3 Cupcakes freebie hunt, and are gleefully enjoying a closet-full of amazing clothing. The ever-generous Mimi Coral has once again graced us with her beautiful dresses and then some! I thought instead of showing two of the dresses as they were, I’d show you how I’ve been incorporating them into my wardrobe – as high-waisted skirts.

I am a high-waisted skirt fanatic in both lives, and as soon as I tried on the Lori dress it just screamed “SKIRT!”. With the girly poofiness and the bow at the back, it’s very much like a skirt I wear in rl and soo my style – even if the rest of this post isn’t. I always wanted to be a punk or a goth in high school, and here I can play out my fantasy whenever I choose. I’ve been itching to wear this Embellished tee with the bad-ass grinning skull cut-out, and I think I finally found the right way. The beautiful makeup of this Cake skin softened the look immediately, which I tried to emphasize with some messy pale pink curls. I thought these swirly Ice Cream socks were a playful nod to my surroundings, the Carnival of Doom, and my boots were a fantastic freebie from Katat0nik.

For my second look I decided to do something a little more approachable. I loved the detailing on the “Brown Fun” skirt outfit, but I’m not much of a fan of the color. To cover the included tan tank top, I reached for a modifiable jacket-layer shirt with a punch of color, like this plum tunic from Last Call. In “Edit> Appearance”, I then simply raised the hem of my tunic just enough to reveal the skirt, and there you have it – a custom outfit that no-one else will be wearing. My skin and hair are both stunning and free, the new group gift skin from Pixel Dolls and a Fuel style available at Savoir Hair (if you haven’t gone yet, what could be keeping you??). My chunky beaded necklace was also a group gift, from Artilleri; and my butterfly friend and his rose are available free in the Ninfa di Boschi outfit from the very giving Baistice creators. The other beaded necklace is discontinued, a casualty of Last Call, and my ankle boots were a steal at only L$35 from Asri Falcone.
