Funk Me Pumps

Filed under: Designer Tribute, Mix and Match, Review — Candy Lemmon @ 8:17 pm

The Footwear Expo is on, and all your favorite shoe designers are out with their best. I was lucky to have a peek some artistic new designs from a store that just isn’t blogged enough: She’s So Unusual Shoes!

Just LOOK at these shoes!!! Imaginative, comical, and perfect for a day at the beach, these Bikini Platforms put an end to all “she’s wearing my shoes!” moments – and look fab doing it. The sculpted bikini laces make for great conversation-starters and interesting tan lines, and come in 5 colors to match your suit. They even come equipped with a tiny beach umbrella-heel, complete with cooler, beach-ball, and a lawn chair! Beat that, Barbie. Thrifty fashion-lovers like me are already familiar with Rowan Carroll’s work, but even I was surprised at the seemingly endless variety available in her main store. Flats, heels, boots, clawed neko pumps, and all the shoes with stuff in the heel that I could want (I have two pairs on my list now… ahh, payday). Stop by the She’s So Unusual Shoes! booth at the Expo for a good look at the selection. With simple sandals, posh pumps, and creations like this, there really is something for everyone.

To compliment such statement-making shoes, I think it’s best to either wear a lot of color or dress very simply. In the end I decided to do both. Something about them said “Amy Winehouse” to me, so I went with a Rockabilly beach-wear look. There’s something both boyish and feminine about a white button-down cover-up, and I liked this Artilleri version for the little knotted tie detail and prim cuffs. Every ‘billy girl needs a few tattoos, and mine are frequently stars or rainbow-colored and even better when they’re both. Sh*t Happens offers another, tintable version of the tattoo as well. The swimsuit was a freebie from the Tanabata Starry Sky festival (thanks Beanie!) and happened to match the tattoo pattern perfectly in a happy accident. The gorgeous hair, one of my all-time favorites and default “hairs with attitude”, is an HCT creation; and this Wax Poetic skin was a “Lucky” past hunt find. The little hair umbrellas I created to finish the look, and because I have been coveting them ever since Amy wore them to a recent performance. Available in many colors just as soon as I open a store.

J-Pop!

Filed under: Freebie Love, Mix and Match — Candy Lemmon @ 1:25 pm

Music, color, and good old fashioned kookiness are all essential parts of J-pop fashion.

Although I usually scamper around the grid wearing whatever happens to be in reach, I do sometimes dress for an occasion. For the Tanabata Starry Sky Festival, I could have donned one of my many MANY kimonos, but I felt like something a little funkier and colorful. I always reach for these rainbow-tinted skates when I’m feeling like having some fun (for instructions How-To, see Bite-Size Candy: Edit Menu Magic), and I decided to go with it and color up the rest of my outfit. This plaid shirt from Thimbles is far from the lumberjack pattern you’d expect, and sure to be seen again in my outfits for fall. My white T-shirt and vest combo (necklaces too) are all on one layer, in the “Female Club-Goer” folder that exists in YOUR Inventory’s Library RIGHT NOW! It’s one of a slew of new avatars made by well-known designers including Nylon, Adam n’ Eve, and many more. Bijou is one of my favorite new Japanese stores, and these fab high-waisted shorts give a clue as to why. The amazing star-patterned thigh-highs were only L$35 from Amerie’s Naughty – a store I’ve just discovered and begun to love – and the record purse is a Digital Eyes dollarbie and a music-lover’s dream.

My ankles were still chilly (why else would so many Japanese fashion girls wear two pairs of socks?) so I pulled on a second set of scrunchy socks; this pair from Stellar Designs. I’m only wearing one earring ’cause that’s how all the cool kids are doing it, often with a dangling feather like this one from Boing Fromage. My faux-hawk was a group gift from a new store called “Glitter Hair” I read about some time ago on the Free*Style blog. I went looking for a mainstore today, and it appears to have changed name slightly and remains under construction – look for “Glitter Love Flower” hair to blow up the blogs soon. My skin today is another “Wax Poetic” design, this time called “Firestarter” with brilliant yellow-and-red eye-shadow. Of course, every real music fan has a collection, and I’m displaying my bin from Killing Moon Records. It was one of my favorite finds from the Retrology Mother’s Day Hunt. And Decollage makes another appearance with my 80’s boombox.

Homme Sweet Homme

Filed under: Mix and Match, Theme Outfits — Van Kline @ 11:44 pm

I’ve been looking forward to doing another individual post for quite a while now, and I found a look that really inspires me in Christian Dior’s Spring/Summer line for 2009.

I prefer dressed-up to dressed-down for any occasion, and I always look great in classic black and white. I love the way designer Kris Van Assche has made it look super fresh and modern by injecting a dose of strong color. I think if there’s one look for guys to take away from Paris fashion week, this is the one.

As soon as I saw the photo from the runway show I thought of this zip-up vest from Aoharu; the color, sheen, and construction are all right on. The vest comes with some Super-Saiyan shoulder attachments, but I decided to leave them off because I wanted to maintain the clean, tailored feel of the menswear line. The shiny texture of the Casa del Shai Adulterer pants matches perfectly with the tie from my Blaze Power Suit, and these high-gloss dress shoes are a staple in my inventory. I chose a hairstyle with a little bit of an edge to compliment the very modern look.

A quick trip through wardrobe and I am back on the runway. I mostly have Candy and Bare Rose to thank for this outfit. The leather jacket comes with four tough-guy designs on the back and a plain version which I’m wearing here. These pinstriped pants are from the Phantom outfit by Bare Rose and Candy was the one to notice how well they went with the jacket. A little bit of color makes a big impact, and this dark blue bow-tie really pops against a monochrome outfit. I blogged these white leather shoes from Redgrave waaaay back when I was the first guy to win a Closet Crisis fashion event and they are still a favorite of mine. I seem to say that about a lot of my shoes…. can’t they all be my favorite?

The Patriotic Pin-Up

Filed under: Designer Tribute, Freebie Love, Mix and Match, Theme Outfits — Candy Lemmon @ 9:57 pm

In our first Independence Day post, we featured the Retrology landscape but not its content. I’m righting that wrong with some of my new Sidewalk Sale treasures, and a few past favorites. I actually bought this outfit a few months ago with the 4th specifically in mind. I dress seasonally in second life, and this cheery bustier and high-waisted skirt combo from Ingenue is the perfect retro compliment to a hot summer night watching the fireworks. I pulled on my favorite frilly white socks and a pair of red platform pumps for a little extra sweetness, and grabbed this fantastic strawberry purse from Chapeau Tres Mignon to carry all my date-night essentials. There was once a time when I thought I’d never buy a bag in second life, but not only does this one echo the cherry print on my skirt, it actually comes with smokes and a tube of red lipstick. That’s hard for any bobby-socking bad-girl to resist! I was leaning towards pigtails or braids and came upon this great past group gift from Aoharu, which resulted in my first blonde and brunette post. Don’t worry girls, once a redhead – always a redhead. My skin is a group exclusive from Frick, a “Retro Pinup” makeup variation, and the quirky and sexy specs that really make this outfit are a delicious Dollarbie (!) from VintageWear at the Starlust. This gorgeous waist-cinching Ivalde belt might just be my favorite Sidewalk Sale find, and I wanted to find a really sexy and glamorous way to show it off. Here’s a look at Vintage another way, a little more campy and traditional. Comme Il Faut recently had a half off sale on their red items, and I took the opportunity to slip into this sexy “La Ideal” dress – let me tell you, I’m beginning to understand the name. I decided to go ahead and go patriotic full force and wear my dollarbie Juicy pumps at the same time, and broke out my new Gianetti prim nails. You’ll definitely be seeing these again, they come in a rainbow of colors and are scripted to extend into huge melee kitty claws – it’s great fun. My classic hairdo is a JetDoll freebie available at Savoir Hair, and the bow is from the “Cindy” Pin Up Doll outfit, one of my virtual faves. The sophisticated arctic fox stole is a Megg Demina creation – and don’t worry animal activists, it’s “faux”! This pose was attached to the crescent moon in The New Champagne Rooms where I shot (available for purchase in the club), but the first shot and many of my others recently have been from Long Awkward Pose. Dove Swanson has been offering a slew of sales, and it’s reminded me to begin giving credit to the pose-makers in our posts.

Red, White, and Barbecue!

Filed under: Mix and Match, Theme Outfits — Candy Lemmon @ 11:31 am

The 4th of July symbolizes a lot of good things: freedom, fireworks, quality time with the people you love, and if you’re really lucky, maybe even some good old-fashioned home grilling. Van and I use any excuse to theme up, so we grabbed our “Independence Day” best and had a ourselves a little date, Retrology-style.

There’s always a rock show on the 4th, but I have a running date to watch fireworks on the concert venue roof with Van every year. I think that made me lean towards more romantic details like the heart stitched on the back pocket of this red mini-skirt. It was an Artilleri group gift from Valentine’s Day, and satisfies my obsession for both high-waists and short hem lines. The puffed shirt and red bowtie I’ve worn before for a Bite Size Candy tutorial, and clearly I’m still charmed by the combination. My striped tank is a G.L.A.M. must-have, and I’d wager you recognize the patriotic-tinted UBU sneakers from your own virtual closets. I picked up the butterfly barrette on a recent Japanese shopping spree, and the Nylon skin many moons ago. The pretty side-pony is brand spanking new from Aoharu, featuring their first “red” texture!!! It’s a bit pink, but I sort of love it in a “Lost in Translation” neon-wig kinda way. Oh! And my sparkly is from Callie Cline’s “Sparkle Sparkle” outfit, modified to be smaller.

Van is manning the grill and indicating just how to show your appreciation. I can’t blame him though, who doesn’t love cooking and kisses? We both had a blast making the most of this Rockabilly location, which has been lovingly decorated for summer. Retrology features some of the best and hardest-working creators on the grid and it was nice to give a little tribute. Van is sporting a little visual love, in the form of a red heart pin from a Nylon Outfitters’ blazer. The vest is Armidi, and the madras plaid button-down is from Shai. He once shamefully referred to this shirt as “over-priced”, and it’s now one of his hands-down favorites. The jeans and red belt are from Indigo, and always deliver a pinch of color when you need it. His bold blue dress shoes are from Jeepers Creepers (who else?), and the skin is Scorpio of course. Armidi is responsible for his shaggy hairstyle, and the quickie spatula was engineered by moi.
